Ragtime Music in Canada
Featuring Some Rag
(1910) by Willie Eckstein and other Piano Rags by Canadian Composers

Chapter 8: Online Sheet Music for
Canadian Ragtime
Included in the table below
are over 150 browsable and
downloadable sheet music covers and pieces of sheet music to Canadian ragtime and
ragtime-related music in the public domain. Below the table, is
a list of additional Canadian rags that are
available (so far) only in print. Since there are so few
"pure" Canadian rags from the ragtime era, I have included in the list
below Canadian
cakewalks, marches,
two-steps, ragtime songs, waltzes and
other piano pieces by known Canadian ragtime composers (or rags about
Canada, as in the case of Canadian Capers
and Saskatoon Rag). In the
lists below, I have tended to not include too many ragtime songs since
my primary interest is instrumental rags. The lists are fairly
complete regarding the inclusion of "pure" Canadian rags, but I have
been quite subjective in deciding what additional two-steps,
syncopated marches or waltzes to include. Criteria for inclusion in
the table below include:
- the composer or performer is Canadian
- the piece is in the public domain from the ragtime era
- the piece is about Canada
- the piece has the word "rag" in the title
- the piece is by a Canadian composer who
has also published a piece with "rag" in the title
- the piece is distinctly Canadian in some way
- the piece is otherwise a syncopated march
or two step, waltz or related to Canada and ragtime in some way
As Kallmann (1960) has written in
A History
of Music in Canada "[c]ommercial
considerations forced the publishers to specialize in dances, marches
and popular ballads rather than serious music" (257). The principal meeting
ground was religious and patriotic music. Kallmann (1960) also notes
that in the1880's (just prior to the ragtime era), there was around
150 pieces published in Canada per year (257). He further notes (258):
The bulk of the published Canadian
music consisted of music in the patriotic and so-called light or
popular vein - marches, galops, waltzes, quadrilles and songs, which
were turned out in great numbers by amateurs as well as musicians
specializing in this type of music. They deserve attention because
they give, through their titles, texts and cover illustrations, a
better reflection of Canadian social history than compositions of more
artistic and academic aspiration.
All of the
sheet music in the table below is in the public domain and available
online for downloading or viewing (for free). For additional Canadian sheet music not included on this
site, see "Sheet
Music from Canada's Past" from
Library and Archives Canada or check the
other online sources for sheet music
on my ragtime sources page.
Set out
below this table is a list of additional rag pieces
by Canadian composers from the ragtime revival era that are available only in print
(i.e., these pieces are still covered by copyright protection).

Additional Print-Based Canadian Pieces:
[top]
The following print-based ragtime-related pieces all appear to
be written by Canadian composers (or are about Canada). Based on my
searches to date, I don't believe any of these pieces are available
in digital or online format and are all therefore in print format
only. In addition, I suspect that some of the pieces below
are more likely "parlour pieces" and not ragtime, but I thought I
would include them in the list as instrumental piano pieces by
Canadian composers with some connection to ragtime. I have not viewed
most of these pieces, but if I am able to obtain copies for pieces in
the public domain, I will digitize them and add them to the table
above. The pieces below
are set out in two sections: Ragtime Era Pieces by
Canadian Composers and
Ragtime Revival Pieces
by Canadian Composers.
Ragtime Era Pieces by Canadian Composers:
[top]
The following pieces were all composed in the ragtime era (circa 1895

have digitized in the table above. Most of these
